Summer Camp at Shining Stars Academy?

Weekly Themes

Week One: June 16 - 20th,Image:Flag of Puerto Rico.svg

 We learn about the beautiful US Commonwealth of Puerto Rico!

 Did you know that this name was a cartographer's mistake? He wanted to label the Island as San Juan and its beautiful port as Puerto Rico, the beautiful port. Instead,  the port was named San Juan (after Saint John) and the Island got the unusual name "Beautiful Port" or Puerto Rico!

On Monday we learn the game of Dominoes. On Tuesday, about Azabache Bracelets, do you know what those are? On Wednesday the festival of Three Kings Day, on Thursday we learn about other interesting facts about Puerto Rico and on Friday it is Loiza's Carnival!

 we visit the amazing 3000 year old country of Italy!  (well not literally visit)

On Monday we learn many wondrous things about Rome. On Tuesday we make the amazing Leaning Tower of Pisa! no it is not Pizza! On Wednesday we learn all about why the rest of the world calls Soccer as Foot ball or Futbol and it is nothing like the American Football. On Thursday we cool off with Italian Ice. And who can talk about Italy without any mention of Pizza!, on Friday we all eat Pizza and learn a few things about it.

The theme is our sweet homeland the good ol United States of America!  

On Monday we talk about the Star Spangled Banner the US Flag. On Tuesday we are off to the Capital Washington DC. Not literally, but we take every opportunity to learn about it. Since the US is the homeland of Aviation, we learn to make paper airplanes on Wednesday. Since Thursday is a day before Independence day, we do frosty Fireworks and get in the spirit of celebrating our Independence on Thursday. On Friday we do a patriotic parade and learn about the things that make us very proud to be Americans!

We learn about Brazil, the home of The Amazon, which includes The Amazon River, the greatest river on earth and about, The Amazon Rain Forest, the most significant ecosystem on the planet!

On Monday we learn a few facts about Brazil, On Tuesday we lean about Samba Music, and possibly learn a few steps? maybe? on Wednesday its time for the Amazon Expedition. On Thursday we make the summer drink of most hot, tropical countries, the Brazilian Limeade and on Friday to celebrate the immense biodiversity of the rain forest, we create an insect.

Week Five: July 14-18 The koala and the eucalyptus forming an iconic Australian pair.Flag of Australia

We learn about another amazing country of Australia, the island continent, the land down under, the land of the Vegemite sandwich (ugh!)

On Monday, mates we learn about various interesting facts about Australia. On Tuesday, we learn about Sydney and its Opera House and Koala Bears (they are not really Bears). On Wednesday we learn about camping out in the bush. I hope someone packed some fly repellant! on Thursday we learn about the immense, and the free and the most amazing wilderness, the Australian outback with hundreds of varieties of the Eucalyptus trees and the unusual red soil. And who could talk about Australia without mention of the Great Barrier Reef, how amazing and fragile it is. We will leave all Friday for that.

Week Six: July 21 - 25 Saint Basil's Cathedral and Spasskaya Tower of Moscow Kremlin at Red Square in MoscowFlag of Russia

We move right back to the top of the Northern Hemisphere to RUSSIA

On Monday we see how Russia is still the biggest country in the world and about all its diversity. On Tuesday we finally make sense of The Nutcracker that we have seen all the time at Christmas. On Wednesday we decorate Matryoshka & make Balalaika. Parents, do you know what those are? On Thursday:  A Space Mission, we learn about the Russian and NASA Space programs. On Friday its time to speak a little Russian, we learn about a few Russian names, words and phrases.

Week Seven: July 28 – Aug. 1 The Great Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza, built during the Old Kingdom, are modern national icons that are  at the heart of Egypt's thriving tourism industry.Flag of Egypt

We go to the more than 5,000 year old country of Egypt, the ancient and most recognized country since the Dinosaurs for most children and adults alike.

On Monday, we learn about Egyptian words, phrases. On Tuesday we travel to Ancient Egypt and try to spell your names on modern Papyrus using Hieroglyphs! on Wednesday we do in one day what took the pharaohs 20 years and 20,000 laborers, We each make a Pyramid! Granted they won't last the evening. On Thursday we cry mommy! no we mean mummy the Egyptian kind, we learn a bit about those. On Friday, we learn about the exotic animals that survive in the hot try deserts.

Week Eight: August 4-8 A giraffe at Nairobi National Park, with Nairobi's skyline in backgroundFlag of Kenya

We learn about the country of Kenya

On Monday we learn some Kenyan Words and Phrases. On Tuesday we learn about Wild Game Parks and all the wonderful animals that roam wild there. On Wednesday we learn to count from Mojo to Kumi, counting in Swahili. On Thursday we see some African jewellery and on Friday we learn about Masks and their uses and purposes.

 

Week Nine: August 11-15 Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City.Flag of Mexico

We learn about the beautiful and amazing country just south of us, Mexico!

On Monday, lets learn about Mexican life and sights and sounds,  in the theme Travel to Mexico.   on Tuesday we make Maracas. On Wednesday, we make Sombreros, the Mexican hats. On Thursday we learn about the Mexican Hat Dance. And what better to do on Friday than Fiesta in Mexico City!

 

Week Ten: August 18-22 The Taj Mahal in Agra was built by Shah Jahan as memorial to wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered to be of "outstanding universal value".Flag of India

We lean about another the mystical and ancient country of India. Thousands of years old, one of the cradles of civilization, and the biggest democracy in the world.

On Monday we learn a few words and phrases in Hindi the national language of a country of more than 20 languages and over 1500 dialects. Many commonly used words in English are from Hindi. like : Khaki, Budget (not surprizing), Albeit, Bazaar, bangle, Chai, caravan, cot, cummerbund, Guru, loot, pajamas, and Shampoo, to name a few. On Tuesday we learn about the architecture and ancient buildings, including the Taj Mahal as mausoleum build by a Muslim king to show his love for his wife and in the image of heaven. Wednesday, we learn about musical instruments, like Sitar and Dhol. On Thursday we learn about the animals of India, including Elephants, that stopped and scared Alexander's armies. On Friday we learn of various games Indian children play.
